life on road

Day 5: Albuquerque, NM to Lubbock, TX

What is life like on a whirlwind cross country road trip?

This morning I've started putting my clothes on backwards and inside out.
In honor of this feat, I thought I'd mix it up today by posting this morning before I head off in search of Lubbock, TX.

There is a rhythm to each day that goes something like this:
wake up at 3 - try to go back to sleep - fail - give up and get up sometime between 4:30 and 5
shower; get dressed; repack car; check oil; fuel up; meet at Rise and Shine location; check in; eat something; make new friends; hit the road; stop here or there; reach next city; find hotel; unpack car; meet at Evening Event; eat; mingle; sleep; rinse and repeat.

::

And later...

Sandia MINI sent us off with a fond farewell and the usual stoppage of traffic as we set off on a flat, mostly straight course toward UFO territory.  No alien sightings to report, but I did witness a fighter jet flyby before we stopped at the International UFO Museum in Roswell, NM.

After a delicious meal at Martin's Capitol Cafe - it was off to Lubbock, TX.  Along the way we were greeted and warmly welcomed into Texas by a group of Texan MINI motorers.     Couldn't pull my camera out fast enough to catch a photo of them!

Fortunately for me, and you, a fellow motorer captured the welcoming committee here:

Just outside of Lubbock, I spied this old theatre.

As I stopped to snap a photo, a young man approached me and asked if we were being required to take pictures and then asked what it was exactly we were up to.   It was fun to tell him about the rally and so very heartwarming to meet people across our nation that were truly interested in our silliness.   Kinda makes you feel like an ambassador of joy...

talk to the camera

This is going to be the world's shortest post.  I have a stalker.  His name is Bernie.

Here are today's totals plus photographic proof I was being followed.
Miles motored:: 1994
Bugs:: what bugs? there were bugs?
Roadkill:: add a chipmunk and a skunk to yesterday
Curse words:: the word of the day begins with the letter F

Here is the stalker and his assistants (the shy one took the photo).

I need to sleep.  GOOD NIGHT.

please pass the salt

Day 3: Wendover, UT to Grand Junction, CO

Totals to date -
Miles motored:: 1609
Bugs fatalities:: the entire cast of Bugs Life, plus all the extras
Roadkill observed:: 2 deer, 3 raccoon,  7 rabbits, 3 skunks and 1 plastic beach ball
Curse words:: 25

Today's adventure includes when weather gets in the way, a guest passenger from the UK, a grumpy room mate, one possible bad thermostat, and the most bad ass car wash in America!

Under cloudy skies the third day of MINI Takes The States 2014 begins with a kick off in the parking lot of McDonald's in Wendover, UT - hey when you have to park bunches of MINIs you go where there is ample free parking.  Much to everyone's dismay we learned that the weather was going to change the plans for the day.  No driving on the Bonneville Salt Flats.  waw waw waw -insert sad face here.   Still we managed to work a photo opportunity out of this...

Which leads me to - I had a guest passenger today.  Riding along with me was Ali Mir who boldly walked up to me at a pit stop yesterday and asked if he could be my co-pilot for the day.  Since this is an adventure, I found myself saying sure! (WTF - who is the alien that has taken over  my body?)
This turned out to be quite fun.  Ali told me all sorts of stories, played some cool tunes, took photos and didn't fall asleep once!

Ali and Ugly Doll hanging out in the co-pilot seat above.

And then there was Alex and her bad mood... Miss Rose woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning - I forget what being 21 was like - do they need more sleep than old people???   After she missed the exit for this first stop this morning it was apparent that she needed a nap.  Happily she snapped out of it by the time we hit the afternoon stop at Papa Joes.

And then the check engine light went on in her car... MINI to the rescue!  Claude and John from MINI USA came over and ran a little diagnostic test on the car deeming it safe to drive onto our final stop in Grand Junction.

We motored on toward the last stop of the day - the Splish Splash Car Wash in Grand Junction. woot, woot!  This was the BEST. Car. Wash. EVER!!!!  It was like the Tron ride of car washes.  A friendly attendant removed my car magnets, another gave me instructions on how to ride the conveyor and a soapy blast to the front windshield (for the great bug massacre) and then boom!  I rode in Felix watching the car being blasted with soap suds, giant brushes, water jets, blowers and cool flashing lights.  Probably delirious from driving, but I thought this was fantastic!

radio radio

Day two: Reno, Nevada to Wendover, Utah (or Nevada depending on where your bed was)

The count to date -
Miles motored:: 753+409
Bugs fatalities:: 200 + oh who's counting
Roadkill observed:: 1 deer, 1 raccoon, 5 rabbits, 2 skunks
Curse words:: 15

The day starts with a little pep talk from the White Roof Radio guys, DB and Todd; breakfast burritos; free window washing and a line up of MINIs two by two for a nice police escort out of Reno - apparently they wanted us OUT.

That's the boot of my car above left and my friend Alex's to the right.  Today we were driving buddies  for the route.  Being a little worried about getting left behind or lost it was nice to have someone to keep in sight.   We managed to go off the route to find ourselves a great little pig themed barbecue place.

I learned several things today about Alex: she enjoys laying on the horn in her MINI just a tad bit too much; she is writing a book about roadside restrooms and must stop at several (um 4 today) along the route; high maintenance is her middle name when it comes to ordering from a menu. She knows how to enjoy a good pulled pork sandwich. Oh and I cannot understand a thing she says when we tried using our 2-way radios.

twist and shout

Day 1 on the road, San Francisco, CA to Reno, NV

The count to date -
Miles motored:: 753
Bugs fatalities:: 200
Roadkill observed:: 1 deer, 1 raccoon
Curse words:: 15

5:30 in the morning came too quickly today.  Way too quickly.  But there was some serious motoring to do.  I made my way towards Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, California over the Bay Bridge.   Kind of overcast - a typical summer in San Francisco.

And perfect for standing amongst a sea of MINIs waiting to hit the road for the first leg of MINI Takes The States.   It was a party, with food trucks, stunts, swag and a whole bunch of very excited people.

Around 8:30AM off we went on our big adventure.   I'm dubbing the first half of the day the Twisties of Napa.  This means hands on the steering wheel, eyes on the road and keep up with the person in front of you.  Oh and no photography - ok, maybe one picture:

I never knew Highway 128 could go on and on and on...  By lunchtime at Niello MINI in Sacramento I was a bit done with following the curves of winding roads and decided to go rogue straight up Highway 80.  Which is where I saw the poor deer by the highway, followed by the raccoon.  Sad.  And slightly weird as I really wanted to stop and take pictures.   But I pushed on towards the Biggest Little City of Reno, Nevada.

Here I got a little rest before going off to "Taj Mahal of Tenpins" - the National Bowling Stadium to rock the lanes with all my fellow motorists.

zzzzzzzz

Miles motored:: 354 give or take a few
Bug fatalities:: 100+
Curse words used:: 10

At 5 am this morning I fell out of bed, put myself together and crept out of Casa de Villa-Schneider.
Stopped to fill up Felix and hit the road to MINI of Valencia for a pre-launch breakfast. Fun party, complete with swag.  Hats off to MoV for their gracious hospitality.

Followed the merry gang of AlphaMINIs along to highway 126 then onto the 101 - where I was busy riding along in the fast lane and missed the part about turning off somewhere near Santa Barbara for some over the hills and through more hills motoring to Solvang.   I was alone!  Until I spy Jeff flying past me with his son Alex.   I couldn't quite catch up, too many hills...

So now it is almost time for the launch party and I can barely keep my eyes open.  I want to sleep.
BUT I WILL RALLY.

Photos to be posted later.
Maybe with debauchery...

a little word of thanks

Last post of the day, before I run off to bed.

It's time to give a shout out to the friends and famiglia who have supported and humored me by listening to me blather on at length about this road trip and then graciously did not try to hide my car keys.  You all are the best!  If your name is here it's because of this and all that you do to keep a smile on my face.  Or you fed me or gave me booze or music.  You know who you are - merci!

In no particular order-Michael::Naomi::Judy::Earl::Mom::Victoria::Nicole::Nathan::Xanthes::Brian::Aidan::Alma::Dee::Alex::EdLo::Rosa::Aris::Whitney::Anthony::Ben-the-nephew::Ben-the-tire-guy::Ben-the-mechanic::Jeff::Jan::Maria::Mary::Gio::who am I forgetting?

Thank you.

As the zero hour approaches, I suddenly feel the need to purchase a duster for Felix. Then I get an idea to make a shoe caddy for the back seat - which gives me something to do besides watch the clock and play Angry Birds.

Christmas Eve

'Twas the night before MTTS 2014 and all through the house - ok it's not night yet and I doubt seriously that there will be much sleeping tonight. Too much excitement - kind of the same as when I run half marathons - sort of like waiting for Santa Claus to show up - ok enough with the analogies... Working on a couple of last minute projects. Will post photos later today.

dos

Some say it's National Tequila Day - in other places, like here - it's 2 days to MTTS 2014 blast off.
And how has the day gone thus far?

Well, bright and early this morning I dumped a whole cup of coffee down the passenger side door.  I guess you could say it was a christening of sorts and now I'm guaranteed safe passage to Boston.
I cannot print here what I said as I'm attempting to keep this site family oriented.  Let's just say I was less than thrilled at wasting an entire cup of joe, plus having to clean up what had been spotless car.

Oh well...

Later I received my notice I'm in the Coast 2 Coast club - the exclusive gang of MINIs going all the way.  Scores us all free laundry services woot woot!

easy as 1, 2 THREE

Today was sponsored by the number 3.

As crickets sing to the end of this third day to launch, I assess my packing job while settling into my pre-launch digs at Casa de Villa-Schneider.  Quiet accommodations in a beautiful guest house.  Free wifi.  And off-street parking!  Score!

I'm exhausted.  I cannot lie - the past month has been taxing.  I am ready for a vacation.  Nothing else really to report.  I need to sleep.

May the motoring gods be with me.  Goodnight.

fore!

I couldn't resist the golf reference.   It's day 4 of the countdown to MINI Takes The States.

On today's agenda:  A) schedule a pitstop at MINI of Austin - by that point in the journey, Felix will be needing an oil change:  B) complete the packing of the clothing - nearly forgot the bathing suit!!! (yes, I'm aware the Fun Fact for Austin clearly permits toplessness for women, but I'm not going there) and C) continue to remain somewhat calm - says the woman who has a virtual cage of butterflies in her stomach.

Too bad I sold my clubs, a little range work might keep my mind off of things...

now serving number...

5
Day 5 is here.  Sheesh!  This is taking forever.

Packing is nearly complete - few loose ends to address and then I'm ready.

In the meantime, there is the newly uploaded MTTS 2014 app to explore:

Looks to be very useful!  And of course it has a sense of humor...

and a seven and a six

70,000 miles on Route 66 - 6 days to blast off!  Was hoping to hit this en route to MTTS, but hey, miles happen.  At least I had the foresight to hop off the highway and hit the ol' Mother Road.   It was perfect!  The odometer hit the 70K milestone just as I happened upon this route marker, so I pulled over and captured the shot.  Like I planned it ;)

And in other pre-trip news.  Holy F!  If I see one more post regarding the packing of t-shirts or underwear I think I may just lose my shit.  Are people really that stupid?  Or in need of that much attention?  Have they never packed for a vacation before?  Am I making the biggest mistake of my life by motoring into this?  Truly, if the posts are for comic effect may I make the following public service announcement:  do not quit your day job and please leave the comedy to the professionals - just get in your little cute car and drive along.  Please.

Oh and wear underwear.
Going commando in a hot car sitting for long stretches where your "seat" is going to get sweaty is wrong.

Magic 8 ball, will I have a fun time on MINI Takes the States?  "Without a doubt"
Seriously how could the ball say anything else?   Follow the eight ball!

8 days and counting...

nine

A freak rainstorm earlier in the week here in Southern California combined with the ever present dust cloud that settles on Felix made him less than photo worthy.  I washed the car today: please hold your applause until the end of this post.

There is something to be said for sending your car through a wash line - for letting someone else deal with the vacuuming, the grimy wheels, the hardened bird poop, the window washing, the drying and the wet feet.   You pay some hard earned cash, let the car go through a machine and then a swarm of detailers take care of drying it off and cleaning the windows.   All while you sit idly staring at your smart phone or annoying others by taking calls.

While washing a car is a task I file along with doing the dishes under Loathing - I don't have the cash to waste on yet another shitty carwash job where I leave only to discover drips and streaky windows when I arrive home.   So this morning I broke out the bucket, the towels and even the wax.

Yes, Felix got a bath.   And I got a lesson in how many knocks this car has taken over the years as I noticed the paint chips, tiny dents and plastic trim that is beginning to crack in places.   Did my best to spruce him up - he does look fairly nice after a scrub.

No photo today.   He's a little shy...

countdown...

There have been posts, and then more posts - but now you all are being put on notice... in 10 days the real thing begins.   15 days on the road in my little car reporting it all back to you my dear readers.

Through the power of the written word, photographs and maybe even a video or two you get to motor along with me.  For free.  Without having to listen to me sing.  Or curse.  You are lucky.

Enjoy!

motel hotel

Haven't officially hit the road yet, but met my first MTTS traveler.  Dallas posted a quiz on the group Facebook page and I won on a technicality, namely don't call a motel a hotel...

Here's Dallas handing over the prize door magnet.

Very cool!  I had been considering buying one of these to go with the Felix edition that Todd of Todd's Mods is making for me.  Now I don't have to.  Thank you Dallas!

there's an app for that

Somewhere, in the plethora of web postings on Facebook I recall reading about an app that MTTS is making available for the route guide.

This will be interesting as past MINI apps I attempted to use on my iPhone never really hit the mark.

My experience with mapping apps on my iPhone has been of the blood sucking, energy sapping variety.   I attempted to use the GPS feature for a drive from Las Vegas only to discover that the phone hadn't been charging while the map was running.   NIKE+ used to operate in a similar fashion on the phone, but I managed to figure out how to get the battery to last through 13.2 miles of running before it hit the red zone.

The Garmin is insurance...

And PS I have shit sense of direction, so do not follow me.  I will eventually get to where I need to be, but only if you don't mind a few detours.  And cussing.  Lots of cussing.

say cheese

Keeping up with a little laughter each day - an old ad I've kept because I find this funny.  The dog sort of looks like he could stand in for the MINI bulldog.

If you can't find your grin, please borrow one.

IT IS ON

OK, not really.  But this happened today

The official reminder email for MINI Takes the States.  Followed by my own hasty hack job to the existing logo with a little alteration...

This is real, gulp!

funnies

Part of my plan for MINI Takes the States is to have a whole bunch of fun.  I like pranks, practical jokes and stuff that pokes fun in harmless ways.  Which is why I decided to add this window sticker to Felix.  It makes me laugh.

Further, it compels me to make this observation:  The buzz around MTTS has reached epic proportions to the point where some folks are choking on it.    This is somewhat amusing, frightening and illuminating - seriously people we are not going to Mars, so you needn't worry about how much underwear to pack or whether you will find food along the way.

Get your water gun, put your top down if you're the topless type and slap a shit eating grin on your face.   And ponder where I put the clown...

Comic relief on the road provided daily.
